Classical Pilates has been taught in the US since the 1920’s. Originally called “Contrology,” Joseph Pilates developed over 500 controlled, precise movements performed either on a floor mat or on special apparatus. As a boxer and gymnast who also studied yoga and martial arts, Joe Pilates developed this system to lengthen, strengthen and stretch muscles without adding bulk. Primarily focused on core strengthening and proper anatomical alignment, Pilates requires concentration and coordinated breathing as individuals perform various controlled exercises to increase strength, mobility, flexibility, balance and efficiency of movement in day to day life.
“The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning develops the body uniformly and corrects posture, restores vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.” -Joseph H. Pilates
Thanks to our close partnership with Classical Pilates Education, a PMA registered teacher training program, Vault Fitness’ instructors are best in class classically trained Pilates instructors. All of our Group Pilates Apparatus classes are taught by our in house highly trained instructors, and we keep class sizes small so that all individuals can still receive the individual instruction that often makes a world of difference in the quality of the Pilates workout.
Unless specified on our schedule, each Group Pilates Apparatus may take place on the Reformer, Tower, or Wunda Chair, or may involve a mixture of equipment and/or props. This, as well as the fast paced nature of our group classes (transitions and flow are how we keep your heart rate up!) is the reason we require 3 Private Sessions before joining Group Apparatus classes, regardless of prior Pilates experience. There is tremendous variation in the teaching styles and equipment between Pilates studios across the country, so we want clients to use the three private sessions to equip them with any information they will need to be successful in group classes. In these three sessions, clients will become familiar with exercise names, changing their own equipment and springs on all pieces of Pilates Apparatus, and learning any modifications for certain exercises which may be contraindicated for any conditions they may have in their individual bodies. If clients have prior Pilates experience, we encourage them to use these 3 private sessions as an opportunity to work on the equipment they are least familiar with, become familiar with the type of equipment we use and the pace of class, and also to just enjoy the one on one attention at the discounted rate!
